{"id":282,"date":"2020-04-27T18:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-27T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.zeiss.com\/tech\/?p=282"},"modified":"2020-04-28T08:49:37","modified_gmt":"2020-04-28T08:49:37","slug":"the-power-of-daily","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.zeiss.com\/tech\/the-power-of-daily\/","title":{"rendered":"The Power of Daily"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cBusiness people and developers must work together <strong>daily<\/strong> throughout the project\u201d <\/em><\/p><cite>Agile Principle<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps the most important meeting from all the\nScrum meetings and not limited to Scrum is the \u201cDaily\u201d. Short, focused and\nenergetic. This is everything you need to start your day and focus on what\nmatters most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some call the Daily to be <em>updates meeting<\/em>,\nother call it <em>status meeting<\/em>, I would say <em>synchronization meeting<\/em>,\nbecause the main goal of the Daily is to synchronize\/coordinate with your team\nmembers in order to achieve your Sprint Goal. You answer the three questions\n(What have I achieved yesterday? What am I planning for today? Any\nimpediments?) or go around the board and check for relevant updates\/impediments.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some simple, but strong reasons to use\nthe Daily:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You achieve TRANSPARENCY which leads to TRUST and AUTONOMY<\/li><li>You CONNECT people together and improve COLLABORATION<\/li><li>You get things DONE<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Each Daily looks different for each Team,\ndepending on people\u2019s personalities, business-design\/technical challenges, team\nmaturity levels, Agile knowledge, etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some typologies of Daily that I identified\nover time while working with different teams and attending \u2018thousands\u2019 of\nDailies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Funeral Daily<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may find this in a team where people do not\ncollaborate well with each other, they are either a newly formed team, or\npartially new team, a team formed of people working more individually rather\nthan in a team. In this situation you miss the synchronization and the Daily\nbecomes a status meeting, as everybody is sharing his\/her updates disregarding\nthe need for interaction. Each one is looking into achieving her\/his individual\ngoal, but not the Team\u2019s goal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many teams go through this phase, some skip it,\nother spend longer time, but ideally this should be just a short stage in a\nteam\u2019s transformation towards a high performing team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>All GOOD, but BAD<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sounds confusing, just wait to see the Daily.\nYou recognize this syndrome from the positive feeling in the meeting, everything\ngoing smoothly, however in the end the Sprint Goal is not achieved. Nobody\nbrings any impediment, nevertheless the team does not deliver. Somehow the\nimpediments are being communicated after the Daily and not captured into the\nnext Daily. You may be surprised to see a bottleneck on the Board and even more\nsurprised that nobody speaks about it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some may say &#8211; you need a Scrum Master to tell\nyou have a bottleneck on the board, I may say \u2013 your team members need to bring\nthe bottleneck to light proactively and correct each other. The Scrum Master\nhas to be there to observe this transformation happening and support the Team\ntowards making this step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Rookies Daily<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a typical Daily for people adopting new\nways of working like Scrum. The beginning is always diverse and confusing until\nthey reach a structure and understand the WHY. In this Daily you may find <em>the\nstorytellers<\/em> who love describing their thoughts and approaches, <em>the\nproblem solvers<\/em> who try to find solutions in a 15 minutes meeting, or the <em>supermen<\/em>\nwho see no impediments. It is normal to have this, as we are different people\nwith different personalities, and it takes time and experimentation to bring separate\npeople to push in the same direction. This is another important stage in a\nteam\u2019s transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Energizer Daily<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Meet the successful Daily that reaches its goal.\nSynchronization happens usually with high intensity, people interact\/ connect\nwith each other in a true conversation. This gives people energy and a sense\nthat helps them to stay focused. It is very simple. People who see this magic\nhappening appreciate Daily so much, they take it to other projects wherever it\nmakes true sense to use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first three typologies (Funeral Daily, All GOOD but BAD and Rookies Daily) are typical stages in the teams\u2019 transformation towards a high-performing team. Any team could go through these stages, however without learning from these stances we cannot improve and evolve. Ideally it is the Energizer Daily the goal for each Scrum Team. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is one thing that can help teams move faster to the Energizer and that is the 4th question in the Daily: <em>How do you feel?<\/em> With this simple question you ideally achieve a collective emotional understanding, empathy and trust. While checking in with your feelings, people get closer to each other, become more open and this increases collaboration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daily is such a great meeting that you can use\nit in every environment, it does not matter if it is Agile or not. It could be\nused anywhere you have a team and get value out of sharing updates\/impediments\nto help people to better coordinate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being a mother of 2 I personally even use Dailies at home:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What did you do today at school?<\/li><li>What do you plan for tomorrow?<\/li><li>Do you have any impediments at school?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You might do it already but did not realize it\nso far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daily could do so much damage if people do not\nunderstand its goal and perform it wrongly on a daily basis, 240 days a year,\nwasting time of each participant.
