Virtual Reality – the New Normal in Microscopy?

ZEISS enables immersive microscopy for life and material sciences

Virtual Reality (VR) solutions are on the rise – products like Oculus Rift or the new PlayStation VR take simulated worlds into the living room. However, VR has probably an even greater impact on our daily lives when deployed in a scientific or industrial context. ZEISS in close collaboration with arivis AG now offers its customers a unique Virtual Reality application for microscopy. Scientists can so explore the inner structures of the parts and pieces they have under their light-, electron- and X-ray microscopes.

Virtual Reality enables fly-throughs of 3D microscopy datasets with simple movements of the head and a controller, from overall views up to detail views in the nanometer range. Regions of Interest can be explored from various perspectives and in their spatial context. Virtual travels through image data create a feeling of immersion that facilitates completely new insights through a better understanding of the spatial structures and their contextual relations. The spectator virtually dives deep into his research data.

The technology behind that virtual entrance into materials is a software-based enhancement to the microscopy technology. The high resolution images of the samples that are created by the ZEISS microscopes are processed by a software solution that visualizes them as volumes or segmented surfaces – and the 3D data glasses make them appear real, just as if the spectator would step into his test sample in order to see what is inside.

3D stands for three dimensional. It has three main properties such as height, width, and depth. Now we move into the 3d world. 3d is more realistic than 1d and 2d technology. You can get more information from here [3] This technology is used also in painting. If you see any 3d painting, You unable to figure out whether it is a painting or real one.
