Bock hunting with the Victory SF – a report by Anna Lena Kaufmann

In May, nature appears at its best. Throughout the day different sound interweave into a many-voiced orchestra in an almost magical way - and without a conductor. In the morning, the blackbird's singing presents the overture.

Later on, the call of the cuckoo joins in and bees happily buzz their melodies. In the evenings you can hear the crickets chirping and the grass swishing.

Experiencing the uniqueness of wildlife

For me, there is no typical hunting family tradition and I was not educated in hunting as a child. I just had a couple of friends who took me to a farm in the region, and they just happened to hunt there.

After the first prey, I caught hunting fever. Only then can you understand other hunters. Over time, my hunting passion has increased. But more than anything else I wanted to be outside as often as possible.

Hunting as a way of life

My father is a hunter but I did not grow up hunting with him. I didn’t discover my passion for hunting until after high school when I began traveling and fell in love with the beauty and variety of species in nature.

I was raised in Southern California where hunting is not a popular activity and my childhood friends did not understand my father’s hunting.

Impressions by David Carsten Pedersen.

Working with a baying dog is quite different than hunting with any other dog. We have probably hunted like that since the stone age, and the relation between the hunter and his dog is very strong. These days, the dogs are fitted

with a GPS to track their movements and help the hunters locate the barking. Once it’s located, you start stalking until you are within range, using the sound of the barks to camouflage your steps.

Alpine hunting in New Zealand.

In New Zealand there still exist mythical landscapes and breath-taking flora and fauna and let’s not forget it also has the Alps. Our small hunting lodge overlooks the Rangitata River which winds towards the Pacific. The hut is old and

not a lodge put up for tourists. The walls are covered in old pictures, trophy bucks on the wall and on the table a few faded hunting magazines.

Stalking

In densely settled Central Europe, the hunt is more indispensible than ever. Crop damage in agricultural monocultures as well as the widespread policy of ‘woods before game’ often clouds the joy of hunting on one's own ground to a great extent. What a joy it then becomes to hunt in a country like Hungary, a place where these problems hardly seem to exist.

A heavenly quiet of the sort that is almost never seen anymore in old Germany pervades the hilly landscape of extensive and primeval mixed woodlands that are a paradise not only for red deer but for boar and roe deer as well.

On the hunt

Since ancient times, hounds have been faithful partners and have provided great help for hunters. The many different kinds of hunting dogs have been bred as a result of the changing requirements of man.

Their tasks vary from fox hunting to deer hunting and from coon hunting to bird hunting, while some hounds have been bred specifically to work in water and some to work on land.

Deep valleys, sharp ascents, high mountains, clear lakes and wild streams: The Scottish Highlands are one of the most exciting and challenging hunting regions of the world. ‘My heart is in the Highlands chasing the deer’ is the chorus of an old traditional Scottish folk song by Robert Burns.

He knew way back then that hunting in the Highlands is a matter for the heart. Not only because of its beautiful nature and various types of terrain, but also because of the warm Scottish hospitality and the whole atmosphere, the Highlands attract passionate hunters from all over the world.
