Carl Zeiss has once again succeeded in recruiting a team of top international stars for roles both in front of and behind the camera in a photo shoot for the company's third art calendar, under the motto "Complementing Moments". Displaying her unique creative and artistic flair, well-known German photographer Ellen von Unwerth has put together a striking series of images featuring Oscar winner Adrien Brody ("The Pianist") and top model Toni Garrn. ZEISS SLR lenses were used in the photo shoots.
Following on from Hollywood star Willem Dafoe, photographed by Wim Wenders, and American actor Michael J. Fox, stage-managed by Bryan Adams, Oscar winner Adrien Brody and leading model Toni Garrn from Hamburg are the stars of the 2012 Carl Zeiss art calendar. Ellen von Unwerth created the very imaginative scenes from studio shots in Paris, which feature them both playfully posing as a perfect pair. In true 1920s style, Brody plays the role of an eccentric bohemian visually reminiscent of Spanish artist Salvador Dali. As for Toni Garrn, pictured seductively with water-wave hairstyle and a dramatic gaze, the comparison with Marlene Dietrich in the film "The Blue Angel" is irresistible.
"The new calendar is a masterpiece of photography, combining technology, creative art and theatricality," said Dr. Michael Kaschke, President and CEO of Carl Zeiss AG. "Our goal is to manufacture lenses of the highest quality. Our photo calendar project is part of our efforts on this front."
The studio shots in Paris ran over two days and proved to be a great deal of fun for all involved.
The ZEISS lenses Distagon T* 2/28, Distagon T* 2/35, Planar T* 1,4/50 and Planar T* 1,4/85 were in their element during the various character portrayals. As an example, they made it possible to capture the mix of enticing and provocative facial expressions and gestures of the models and their various roles in all their contrast and emotion. Whether it's Toni Garrn as a shadow boxer, puppeteer or balloon seller, or Adrien Brody as a guitarist, magician, smooth operator or lady killer - Ellen von Unwerth's skillful play with light/shadow effects and sharpness and soft focus gives the actors an electrifying presence.
"Carl Zeiss represents visual excitement, and we aim to convey this in our calendar," says Jörg Nitschke Group Spokesman Carl Zeiss AG. "The words 'Complementing Moments' communicate the relationship with our customers through art, which is something very special for us."
The calendar is a limited edition item and is not available commercially. The finished product was shown to invited guests and the press in Hamburg in October.
